Description/History: Kegan was a pretty little baby, separated by six years from her only sibling, Esteban. She was born with a bright red tuft of hair and a tiny little bud of a pink nose, prompting her proud father to name her Kegan (bright shining flame) Rosaleen (little rose). Her big brother was briefly fascinated by the squalling bundle, but in the fashion of little boys he soon went back to his sticks, rocks, and toy boats.

As the children grew, Kegan developed a major case of hero worship toward Esteban. She followed him everywhere he let her, growing strong in the fresh air of the Highlands, and, to her mother's utter dismay, becoming a total tomboy. The only impact her mother was able to make toward any kind of femininity was to at least keep Kegan dressed in skirts.

The older they got, the more talk Kegan heard about the day when her brother would go away to join the family sailing business. She was young and carefree, and shrugged it off as something to wonder about another day. When she was eleven, that day came. She ran in from the fields one day, looking for Esteban, and found him packing a large rucksack. She cried and fussed, then ranted and yelled, but neither her parents, nor her brother relented. He was seventeen, and happy to go. Their parents were proud to see him join the family business.

Then the news came. His ship had been attacked, and Esteban had been pressed into slavery on another vessel. Life went by so slowly as Kegan and her parents went about their normal routines, not knowing if he was dead or alive. Kegan kept up her schooling, learned enough about housekeeping to please her mother, and took lessons in knife fighting from her father.

Finally, one day, four years after he left, Esteban came home. Kegan was outside feeding the chickens at the time, and went running to greet him. He stayed home only a month or so, telling stories of adventure and daring, before leaving again. This time, at the age of fifteen, Kegan begged to be allowed to go with him. He absolutely refused to take her, and again she watched her idol leave home.

She spent two more years at home, practicing with her knives, and taking sword lessons from her grandfather as Esteban had done before he had left. When she turned seventeen she joined the family business as well. With bloomers under her skirts, and her bare toes gripping the ropes, she soon proved to have an amazing skill at climbing the rigging. After three years working as a topsman on one of her family's boats, Kegan went ashore for supplies one day, only to hear rumors of a recent misfortune on her brother's ship. With a smile, she put in her notice with her captain and gathered her things, travelling to the port she knew her brother was most likely to be at. He'd have to take her now. He needed her. She'd talk him into it somehow.
